After carrying out multiple washing machine repairs in Gloucestershire our team have a host of tips and tricks to help reduce colour run. Here is why your colours run and how to avoid it happening in the future:

Why do colours run?

They often run when manufacturers use cheap clothing dyes or insufficient drying/curing techniques. This means the colour isn’t securely locked into your clothes fabrics leaving them susceptible to colour run.

You will often find that the most common colours to run are oranges and reds. We would recommend when you purchase a new item no matter what the colour is to wash it separately first. After that initial wash your item should be fine with other items of clothing. To be safe you should always properly sort your clothes into whites and colours.

How to avoid colour run

1. Do no overload the machine.

This is because the wash will be rougher and the clean will be uneven.

2. Use a colour catcher.

These sheets are designed to stop colours running allowing you to wash multiple colours all at once with no worry.

3. Check your clothes labels.

Some clothing has a higher risk of colour run such as those which are “hand wash only” or labelled “colour may run”.

What is the best washing machine setting to avoid colour run?

We would recommend a cool wash for coloured clothing. This will keep energy usage low and prevent any unwanted colour run especially if you are using using our advice above.
