How to keep your fridge fresh and clean

A refrigerator is an essential home appliance and one which we head to multiple times each day. It’s easy to presume that your fridge is fresh and clean seeing as it’s closed for the majority of the day, however, you would be shocked at the hygiene of the inside of your refrigerator. After choosing the best fridge for your home and maintaining it to avoid an unnecessary fridge repair, why wouldn’t you freshen up the inside to remove bad odours?

It’s only natural that food expires and spills so what can you do to keep your fridge smelling fresh and looking clean?

Being a Bosch partner it’s only right that we share their top tips:

1. Make sure your fridge temperature is set correctly

Bad smells are often caused by food spoilage, which is why fridge temperature is important. A high temperature leads to food spoilage while a low temperature might cause energy-wastage. Ideally, fridges should be set at 0 to 4 degrees Celsius, and freezers at -18 degrees Celsius.

If your fridge or freezer isn’t cold enough even after you’ve adjusted the temperature setting, it may indicate a larger problem. Call a professional to have your fridge checked for any leaks, problems with the drip pan or a malfunctioning defrost drain. If not attended to, these issues can raise fridge temperature and cause food to go bad prematurely.

If you are struggling to keep your fridge or freezer to the recommended temperature then please get in touch to book a fridge repair.

2. Clean your fridge shelves regularly

Just like cleaning other areas of your house, it’s important to add your fridge interior to that list of jobs. Dirt and bacteria can build up inside your fridge which means your food won’t last as long. Bosch recommends cleaning any ‘movable’ parts inside the fridge such as shelves and drawers. All you need to do is to soak them in warm, soapy water for a few minutes before taking a kitchen sponge to remove any stains. Leave them to air-dry completely while you do a thorough wipe of the fridge.

3. Clean up any spillages immediately

This tip is self-explanatory and one which you should implement into everyday life. The longer you leave a spill the harder it is to remove and the more they smell. Bosch recommends fridge liners because they are perfect for absorbing accidental spills and are easy to dispose of. When messes do occur, all you have to do is remove and wash the affected liner, rather than wipe out the entire fridge.

4. Neutralise odours with a deodoriser

If you find no matter how often you clean your fridge it’s still smelling then a neutraliser could be your best friend. Some natural remedies you can use are baking soda and fresh coffee grounds. Bosch recommends placing them at the back of the fridge and replacing them around once a week.

If you need a fridge repair or are considering a new machine perhaps you could invest in a fridge with built-in technologies that combat odours. We would recommend the Bosch refrigerators with airfreshFilters.

5. Keep your fridge organised

Having an organised fridge will ensure that you eat food before it expires thus reducing the bad odours in your fridge. Using air-tight containers will help not only visually but will maintain food freshness.
