Cost is one of the main factors when deciding to change your cooker so what’s the difference?
These costs depend entirely on your household and how much you use your cooker. An electric cooker will use less energy but this doesn’t mean it will cost less. Electricity costs more than gas per unit, so although you will be using less energy by purchasing an electric cooker you could end up spending more. In addition to this, gas cookers are usually cheaper to purchase than electric cookers.
Overall, gas cookers are cheaper to purchase and run however this shouldn’t be the only factor when considering your purchase. Here are the pros and cons of both types of cooker:
Gas Cooker
A gas cooker produces heat using a continuously burning gas flame and often has 4 rings, a grill and an oven. Due to the heat being produced using gas it’s important to note that you should have a well-ventilated room when considering purchasing a gas cooker.
Pros:
- Costs less: Running costs are lower due to gas units costing less than electric units.
- Easily controlled: Gas Hobs offer easy to control and evenly spread heat across the pan meaning they are better for simmering food.
Cons:
- Uneven heat distribution: It’s rare to have a fan oven with a gas cooker meaning the heat distribution is less even. Gas ovens are hotter at the top and cooler at the bottom – This can be seen as a pro and a con depending on your cooking style.
- Harder to clean: As many gas cookers have rings rather than a flat surface they are usually trickier to clean.
- Slower: They take longer to heat up large quantities of food or water.
Electric Cooker
An electric cooker often has 4 stoves and between 1-2 ovens depending on the style you go for. They’re powered by electricity which has it’s benefits and downfalls – Please see below the list of pros and cons our team of Worcestershire cooker repair experts have made:
Pros:
- Hygienic: Electric cookers are much easier to clean meaning they stay hygienic and sparkling clean.
- Even heat distribution: This is caused by the fan blowing the heat to create an even temperature which helps to cook food evenly.
- Increased functionality: Electric cookers come with multiple functions meaning you can cook using different heat setting simultaneously.
- Induction: Cooking on an induction hob takes less time because it takes less time to heat up whilst still providing even heat distribution.
Cons:
- Costs more: The overall cost in running and purchasing is higher.
- Heat retention: Electric hobs retain the heat longer than gas or induction hobs.
